Our Journey Since 1946

Founded in 1946 by resilient Japanese American families returning to the Monterey Peninsula after World War II, our temple began as a beacon of spiritual guidance and cultural continuity. Rooted in the Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-ha tradition, the Monterey Peninsula Buddhist Temple was established to provide a sanctuary where the Nembutsu teachings could flourish, offering a communal home for those seeking a path of wisdom and compassion in the Seaside community. Through decades of dedication, our Sangha has grown from a humble gathering into a cornerstone of peace and mindfulness on the coast.

Today, we maintain a profound and direct connection to our mother temple, Ryukoku-zan Hongwanji in Kyoto, Japan, serving as a vital link to centuries of lineage and Buddhist thought. Our history is one of resilience, community, and the shared journey towards awakening. As we move forward, we remain dedicated to our role in the broader Monterey community—acting as a bridge between ancient tradition and modern life. We invite all to join us in honoring our heritage while continuing to build a future grounded in gratitude, kindness, and spiritual growth.

The Monterey Peninsula Buddhist Temple belongs to the Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-ha school, a tradition that emphasizes the path of Amida Buddha’s infinite compassion. Our teachings focus on living a life of gratitude and awareness through the practice of Nembutsu.

Kyoto Mother Temple

We are connected to the Ryukoku-zan Hongwanji (Nishi Hongwanji) in Kyoto, Japan. As our mother temple, it serves as the spiritual heart and historical foundation of our lineage, connecting our local Sangha to a global Buddhist community.
